Woodbury Common is located to the
East of Exeter, just beyond the village of Woodbury. Click
here for a map.
To get to Woodbury, leave the M5 at the
services junction (30) and take the road towards Exmouth and
Budleigh Salterton (B3059). Follow signs for Woodbury. When
you get to Woodbury, go straight through the village and carry
on up the hill, still towards Budleigh. Carry on up the hill
until you reach the crossroads at the top (2 miles). Woodbury
Common is now directly in front of you.
Four Firs car park, which is the starting
point for the main route, is directly ahead of you just over
the crossroads. You can also park at the Woodbury Castle car
park which you can find by turning left and driving for about
half a mile (there are car parks either side of the road).
Other car parks are also marked on the map.
Be Warned: Woodbury
Common car parks are a favourite haunt for petty thieves (probably
mostly in summer - there don't seem to be many about at 8am
on a frosty winter Sunday morning - funny that... ;o). So,
if you have valuables in your car (or fancy a warm-up before
your ride) you could always park in Woodbury itself and cycle
up to the common.
A free car park can be found by turning
left in the centre of Woodbury, then driving up the road (past
the Maltsters pub on your right) and eventually turning right
just past the green and church (on your left). The car park
is 50 yards up the road on the left-hand side. Click here
for a map.
To get to the common
You then have two choices:
a) Either cycle back down to the village
centre, turn left and cycle up the hill following the directions
above or
b) Come down the side road from the
car park and turn immediately right and go up the hill that
bears off to your right. This will take you up the 'back road'
to the common and past the entrance to Woodbury Park, the
Golf Course and Country Club owned by Nigel Mansell. When
you pop out onto the main road at the top, either turn left
to get to the castle car parks or right to get to Four Firs.
Haldon Hill
From the North: Come down the M5
and take the A38 up Haldon Hill towards Plymouth (right-hand
split in the motorway). After half a mile or so, just before
the brow of the hill, take the sharp left-hand turn off to
the Exeter Racecourse. Turn right at the mini roundabout and
then follow that road straight on until you come to a diagonal
crossroads. This is the best place to park (either on the
verge over to the left by the treeline, or on the grass in
the middle of the junction).
