Route Details
1. Before (or after) you head out on the
route, take a quick ride over the road and down the track
out of the car park the other side. There's a fantastic view
of the Exe Estuary on a clear day.
As you come out of the car park past the
sign, go down to the right and then cut through the woods
to the left. Follow the path around the edge of the 'moat'
and then cut up to your left still in the trees.
2. Towards the top of the hill cut down
to the right joining the path which then follows the bend
round to the right for about half a kilometre (to waypoint
3).
3. When you reach this main junction, turn
right and take the middle path which gradually goes downhill
for about half a kilometre again. At the end of the path it
drops steeply down a gully and through a stream, then up a
(usually very muddy after a lot of rain) path towards Uphams
Plantation.
4. When you hit the path (by a sheep pen),
turn right, then bear round to the left and along the side
of the plantation (you could also carry straight on having
turned out onto the path and go up to the castle this way
- not marked).
5. Take the path off to the right before
you hit the road and climb gradually until you are level with
Four Firs car park.
6. Turn right again and head up the hill
towards the castle.
