Red Route | Printer Friendly Version | Short Routes Index

This ride goes from the Woodbury Castle car park, round the back of the MOD range and down to the edge of the common where there is a great run of level single track ending in a couple of stream crossings, then comes back up the hill to the car park. It is pretty much uphill all the way from the streams to the castle, but not steep.

NB - The part where the path heads down to the edge of the common gets fairly steep and there are lots of loose rocks. Tricky for beginners...

Mouse over waypoints for more information.

Copse Route As you come out of the car park past the sign, go down to the right and then cut through the woods to the left. Follow the path around the edge of the 'moat' and then cut up to your left still in the trees. Towards the top of the hill cut down to the right joining the path which then follows the bend round to the right for about half a kilometre (to waypoint 3). This is quite a major junction with a copse over to the left. Carry straight on along the path. Keep going and bear left at the next split (still going more or less straight). Again, ignore the right -hand fork and go straight on (there should be another path that comes in from your left). Follow the path on down the hill, this time ignoring the left-hand turning. When you are almost at the bottom of what should now have turned into an off-road track, there should be a green barrier on the right and a path heading off beyond it. Take this path past the barrier. This will take you along a great piece of traversing single track which runs for the best part of a kilometre. As you go along this single track there will be lots of side routes etc... If you carry on in the same direction until you get to warning sign about the range (midway between waypoints 7 and 8) - at which point you head over to the right - you should be fine. Carry straight on here (there will be a path coming in from the right) in the same direction you have been travelling. This is the first slatted footbridge. Carry on across. Go down to the second stream crossing here, then up the other side (up some 'steps'). As you come out into the open, go up the hill off to your ahead-right. When you hit a T-junction, turn right, go down this hill and then up the other side. When you are approaching the corner of the plantation on your left you have 2 choices - see below for details

Route Details

1. As you come out of the car park past the sign, go down to the right and then cut through the woods to the left. Follow the path around the edge of the 'moat' and then cut up to your left still in the trees.

2. Towards the top of the hill cut down to the right joining the path which then follows the bend round to the right for about half a kilometre (to waypoint 3).

3. This is quite a major junction with a copse over to the left. Carry straight on along the path. Keep going and bear left at the next split (still going more or less straight).

4. Again, ignore the right -hand fork and go straight on (there should be another path that comes in from your left). Follow the path on down the hill, this time ignoring the left-hand turning.

6. Carry straight on here (there will be a path coming in from the right) in the same direction you have been travelling.

7. This is the first slatted footbridge. Carry on across.

8. Go down to the second stream crossing here, then up the other side (up some 'steps'). As you come out into the open, go up the hill off to your ahead-right.

9. When you hit a T-junction, turn right, go down this hill and then up the other side.

10. When you are approaching the corner of the plantation on your left you have 2 choices:

a) Dive off the path to your right (through a gap by the sheep pen) and out across the common, down to the stream, then up the bank on the far side, all the way up this hill to 3 and then back to the castle.

b) Carry straight on and head up the gradual hill (very wide track) back to the castle (you will be able to clearly see the wood on the hill in the distance).

If you are up for a few thrills around waypoint 9 try hopping onto the Pink Route and heading down one of the hill options. You can then follow it back round and pick up this route again (at waypoint 10).

You could also join the Green Route at waypoint 10 and extend your ride.
